Knowing what motivates an irrational belief is not a simple process of thinking about it or studying a book. In my experience, one must first recognize there is a problem, then learn to ask the right questions, then go about answering them as best as possible, then simply just live for awhile with uncertainty and eventually the truth just pops up clear as day. Sometimes the truth comes fast, but in my experience, the longer one has lived with a certain inner belief or mindset, the longer it takes to undo it.
When one finally sees the former belief objectively it's often wondered why it was so hard to see it for what it was in the first place. That is the power of a belief. One does not know that one doesn't know, until one first can recognize there is a problem, which leads to making a choice to either question the belief, or alter one's perception to accommodate the inconsistency of the belief in a real world.
In my humble opinion, one must have the courage to forget what one wants to believe. It takes courage to challenge something that gives one meaning, purpose, or simply put... security.
